Dare I say it for fear I will jinx things? Our building contractor confirmed yesterday that he will book the final inspection for the “certificate of occupancy” ASAP and we can probably move into our new house next week!
We’ve waited so long, it is a bit surreal to imagine that we are really about to get our stuff back and begin living here. My sister and her husband have been absolute angels to put us up at their home for seven months when we thought it would only be four. It was quite an adventure, four adults learning to live together. We shared chores and expenses, kept each other company, and brought a rich mix of interesting daily news to the dinner table. It will be a welcome change for everyone, though, to return to our separate households and spread out into our own spaces again.
Our farm is adjacent to my sister’s property so we’ll always be close by to share tea, movies, an evening sip of wine, and to help each other with projects. That sounds very nice to me. Becky and I are seven years apart and I have enjoyed getting to know her as adults later in life since our childhoods did not intersect that much. We are hoping to take on the added responsibility of bringing my mother into our household as well, and that will be another big adventure. She is 88 years old and I would love to see her surrounded by family instead of living amongst the elderly in an assisted living facility. We designed our house with that goal in mind.
So, cross your fingers for us! If we pass inspection, we’ll be moved in by this time next week, albeit surrounded by cardboard boxes waiting to be emptied.
