After a grueling weekend of heavy lifting and getting down and up off the ground many, many times, we are done! We now have four paved areas – the long sidewalk from the driveway to the breezeway, and three landing pads at the bottom of the deck stairs at the back, corner, and side of the house.
We had rented a stone cutter and a compactor from the local hardware store and they had to be returned by 7:30 this morning so we really pushed to get it all done by 9:00 last night. Needless to say, we slept quite soundly last night and were shocked when the alarm went off at 6:00 am. We are quite happy with the results even though in the final hours we grew to be less and less meticulous about the perfection of the process. We never got irritable with each other, though, so I think we have this teamwork thing pretty well developed after 35 years of marriage!
Just to complete the process, I think I ought to provide photos of the final steps to finishing each paving. After the preparation that I showed in the last entry, there were three more things to be done.
We had to spread special sand into the cracks between the stones, then shake it all in with a compactor and finally hose it down so that the grains of sand would grip tightly to each other and form a solid seal. Hopefully, with the gravel, paving sand, and this seal we will never have plants poking their way through the sidewalk.
Here is the hosing and the finished product.
