Deer Love Winterberry

1013141454I was so excited to install winterberry bushes in our back yard garden, looking forward to those gorgeous red berries against the snow all winter.  Oh, I get it.  The local animals were excited about it as well.

I was out shovelling and examining the tracks in the snow to sleuth out who had been present overnight.  I found little birdy feet in the chicken run where they found bits of cracked corn the chickens were too cold to go out and peck up.  I found bunny tracks next to the house where the wind carved troughs into the snow drifts.  I found the graceful tracks of a solitary deer across the yard heading out to the tree line.

That’s when it dawned on me that the tracks spent a good deal of time circling the winterberry bushes before they moved on.  The branches are now just nude sticks.0110151115
